There can be no more magnificent creature than the African elephant, and the opportunity to interact with a family of working animals whilst exploring their natural habitat is a real privilege. Riding on elephant back gives you a unique advantage when game viewing and promises an intimate and emotional experience, which will last you a lifetime.

Abu Elephant Camp, Botswana

Elephant back safaris were pioneered in the Okavango Delta some 17 years ago, and they remain one of the most unusual and exciting ways to explore the flood plains of this wetland paradise. Your base is Abu Camp, a luxurious safari camp of six custombuilt, stylishly furnished ‘tents’ set on a tranquil lagoon in an ancient riverine forest.

The camp’s ‘family’ of elephants, which guests interact with, are utilised for half-day and full-day safaris - each adult elephant carrying two guests in a comfortable custommade saddle - when you will approach and view a wide variety of other game. In addition, Abu Camp also offers game drives in 4WD vehicles and escorted bush walks.

Camp Jabulani, South Africa

Camp Jabulani is utterly spoiling, its six lavish suites each boasting a private viewing deck, plunge pool, and a personal butler to cater to guests every whim. Jabulani also offers a host of other activities including game drives, bush walks, clay pigeon shooting and excursions to the world-renowned Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre.

The camp’s daily elephant back safaris through the stunning confines of the Kapama Private Game Reserve are equally memorable, and allow you to view game (the ‘big five’ can all be seen here) at remarkably close quarters whilst safely seated on comfortable canvas-covered saddles behind an experienced elephant handler.
