Addis Ababa
Ethiopia's historical capital and home to 'Lucy'.
Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia, the seat of the African Union, the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and many international organisations. It is increasingly becoming the diplomatic centre of Africa and its prime conference venue.
Wide tree-lined streets, fine architecture and glorious weather make Addis Ababa a delightful place to explore: a city of surprises characterised by remarkable diversity and contrasts. Its cozy espresso bars are reminiscent of Rome and the Mediterranean, while bustling outdoor markets are colourful reminders of a more traditional way of life. Distinctive peoples, bursts of music from the cafes and shops, and the pungent aroma of spicy cooking, coffee and frankincense form a unique Ethiopian pastiche.
Historical monuments, museums, churches and palaces…the cultural attractions of Addis Ababa are numerous and include the Ethnographic Museum that is housed in the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie and provides a great introduction to the rich diversity of the Ethiopian peoples, the National Museum with its fascinating collection of human fossils and ancient archeological artefacts, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral. This, the largest Orthodox Church in the country, houses the tombs of the Emperor and the Empress as well as the patriots who resisted five years of Italian occupation.
