Madagascar
Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, broke away from Africa some 65 million years ago and so isolated many unique species of flora and fauna.
Despite the cutting and clearing of the central highlands by the first settlers, the island’s stunning diversity is really something not to be missed. There are a wide variety of cultures and tribes, some 23 species of lemur, two thirds of the world’s chameleon species, a rich diversity of flora and many rare birds. Different altitudes mean that there is also every type of climatic condition and vegetation from lush forest to dry, arid areas. In addition to the 150,000 endemic species of flora and fauna, wildlife reserves protect fossilised forests and fantastic geological formations created by centuries of erosion.
A legacy of richly decorated tombs, sculpted totems and erotic carvings adorn the country in honour of the dead and bear witness to the unique Malagasy ‘cult of ancestors’. A visit to Madagascar is a very special experience and the people, despite terrible poverty in certain areas, are very friendly. Naturally, the standard of accommodation is not up to western standards and the infrastructure quite often unreliable with a poor domestic flight service and rough roads. An open mind and sense of humour, as well as a realistic approach and genuine desire to see strange and wonderful wildlife, will ensure an incomparable holiday.
