The Great Migration

The annual migration of 1.4 million wildebeest and 200,000 gazelle and zebra has to rate as one of the world's top wildlife experiences.

Migration in Tanzania

Although there is no beginning or end to the movement of the wildebeest, we start our story in the southern Serengeti National Park where up to 400,000 wildebeest calves are born between January and March.  The animals begin to mass on the Serengeti Plains and then follow the rich grass firstly west pushing nearly as far as the shores of Lake Victoria in an area known as the Serengeti Western Corridor.  Then between July-August, the animals will start heading north towards the Kenyan border - and of course wherever there is such prolific plains game, predators will not be too far behind.

Tanzanian Camps & Lodges: Ndutu Safari Lodge, Serengeti Serena Lodge or Kusini Camp provides an excellent base for seeing the migration in January - May.  Serengeti Safari Camp is a mobile camp which moves to follow the migration so is perfectly located at all times.  Grumeti River Camp is a good base for the wildlife in June and July when the animals are in the western Serengeti before heading to northern Serengeti.  Click here for further information

Migration in Kenya

By August the migration is beginning to head into Kenya to enjoy the sweet post-rain grasses of the Masai Mara.  Here you may see the much photographed crossing of the Mara River but the timing is never predictable.  The wildebeest, zebra and gazelles tend to remain in the Mara until October when they begin to drift back to Tanzania.
