Three Arctic Islands

Three Arctic Islands

From Iceland, this expedition takes you high into the Arctic Circle. You’ll cruise the icy wonderland of Viking explorers and encounter a huge variety of local inhabitants.

It could just be the most memorable fortnight of your life. By voyaging to these three unforgettable islands you will have the opportunity to enter the realm of Viking adventurers. You will sail across glittering seas strewn with ice floes. You will visit the birthplace of icebergs; find yourself in one of the world’s most beautiful fjord systems; visit extraordinary volcanic regions and walk across flower-bespattered tundra meadows.

You could encounter polar bears and walruses. You could watch bearded, ringed and harp seals at play. You could photograph bowhead and beluga whales breaking surface between majestic icebergs.

And you will definitely see innumerable seabirds in their colossal, cliff-edge nesting sites. You may even feel the spirit of the Vikings as you prepare to land on an icy shore, in your Zodiac ‘longboat’.

Sample cruise itinerary

Day 1:  Embark in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen or Reykjavik, where this sample itinerary begins. Longyearbyen itineraries are the reverse of this example.  Day 2:  Calling at Westman Islands for its puffin colonies and weird volcanic geology.  Days 3-4:  Enjoy onboard presentations by our Expedition Team as you sail through the Denmark Strait.  Days 5-9:  Arrive at Greenland’s spectacular eastern coast for Zodiac shore visits. Hunt for musk ox, polar bear and walrus. Sail through the fantastic fjord system of Scoresbysund – birthplace of icebergs.  Days 10-11:  Sail the famous Greenland Sea, identifying the birds soaring overhead.  Days 12-13:  Explore the surprisingly diverse flora and fauna of the Spitsbergen Archipelago. Expect indigenous Svalbard reindeer, kittiwakes, long-tailed ducks…Day 14:  Disembark and say your goodbyes, ready to catch your homeward flights.

Shore visits are part of the experience but depend on weather conditions. Extra excursions vary with different itineraries and weather, and could typically include:

  • Kayaking on the icy waters
  • Hiking
  • Snow shoeing
