Gardens of Mexico
In the BBC programme Around the World in 80 Gardens, Monty Don visited four gardens in Mexico including the surreal Las Pozas and the Ethnobotanical Gardens in Oaxaca.
Etnobotanical Gardens, Oaxaca
Started in 1993, the Etnobotanical Garden in Oaxaca is an extensive collection of cactii. The gardens highlight the diversity of the plants as well as their many uses and the main purpose is to spread this knowledge to other native communities and schools in the area.
The Gardens are open for guided tours in English at 11am and 4pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There is a nominal charge for these tours.
The Etnobotanical Gardens can be included on any itinerary which visits Oaxaca such as our Ultimate Mexico.
Las Pozas, Xilitla
Las Pozas is a sculpture garden built by Edward James in a tropical rain forest in the mountains of Mexico. It includes more than 80 acres of natural waterfalls and pools interlaced with towering Surrealist sculptures. Completely integrated with the surrounding forest, Avery Danzinger, creator of a documentary film on Las Pozas, commented that "Edward James took Las Pozas from the forest and now the forest is taking it back". Today a federation has been formed to try to restore it to its former glory
Edward James is reputed to have spent somewhere in the region of $5 miilion building this remarkable garden from 1949 onwards. He was one of the first ardent admirers of surrealist art and took this love to the extreme building massive sculptures, palaces, temples and pagodas within the tropical forest full of orchids and other exotic plants.
