Bhutan Trekking

The lower hills are cloaked in semi-tropical and alpine forest, while above the tree line the country is wild and rugged with spectacular mountain views. Here wildlife roams unhindered and there is every chance of seeing bear, herds of blue sheep and eagles.

The options available include:

• Gangtey Gompa, a gentle and picturesque 3-day trek through the remote valleys of Central Bhutan;
• 6-day trek on the Druk Path between Paro and Thimphu with wonderful panoramic views of the Himalaya;
• 14-day Laya Gasa trek, a spectacular high altitude journey to Jhomolhari base camp and the remote village of Lingshi on Bhutan's north-west border with Tibet.

Poppy Treks with Amanresorts

In the months of June and July, the mountainsides are ablaze with colourful floral displays including red, white and pink poppies - and if you are very lucky, the extremely rare blue poppy which is Bhutan's National Flower.  During this time, Amanresorts offers six or seven night Poppy Treks based on two or three nights of trekking with overnights in stylish tented camps, as well as two nights in Amankora Thimphu and two nights in Amankora Paro.

Trekking days incorporate 3 - 5 hours of walking with elevations ranging from 3,000 - 4,500 metres. Paths wind over pasture lands; through forests of pine, cypress, fir and rhododendrons; and over scenic mountain passes where poppies nod their fragile, yet hardy, heads. All trekkers need to carry is their camera as they take in the spectacular scenery.  As dusk falls, overnight camps offer rustic yet comfortable stand-up tents fully furnished with cots, tables, chairs and carpets, and three meals a day served as picnics or in the spacious dining tent. Separate shower and toilet tents ensure privacy.

On either side of the trek, guests can relax in Amankora's lodges and explore the valleys of Thimphu and Paro.
