Scattered throughout India are privately owned palaces, forts and castles that have been preserved as exquisite hotels.

These classic 'heritage' hotels are mostly family-run, which gives them a special intimacy, and, whilst they may lack some modern 'luxuries' and the electricity and plumbing may be a little erratic at times, they offer a warm welcome and an opulence, charm, history and atmosphere that no modern imitation could hope to match.

Conversely, a new breed of hotel and camp has sprung up In India, offering the kind of comfort and service that has made them modern classics in their own right.
