Egypt à la Carte

Egypt à la Carte

The legendary Nile may be the jewel in Egypt’s crown, but the fabled land of the Pharaohs has a wealth of other attractions. Egypt ‘a la carte’ offers just small selection of what else this fascinating country has to offer.

Diving on the Red Sea

The shallow shelves fringing the deep rift that separates Africa and the Arabian Peninsula are home to spectacular, colourful coral reefs teeming with marine life. With over 1000 species of fish and some 200 different hard and soft corals, the Red Sea offers some of the best diving in the world. With the development of Egypt’s Red Sea coastline, diving here has become ever more popular. All the major resorts and hotels from Sharm el Sheik down to Hurgahadah have diving centres and schools, offering PADI courses to beginners and trips to exciting dive sites to the experienced.

Nile Perch Fishing

The Nile Perch is the world’s largest fresh water fish available to anglers, and is found in lakes and river basins across large parts of Africa. Given their size, which can be anything up to 400lb in weight and over 6’ in length, they present an exciting challenge to the angler. In Egypt, the Nile Perch was introduced into Lake Nasser after its creation in the 1960s, and can now be found there in prolific quantities, practically guaranteeing a catch. Fishing ‘safaris’ on the lake include both trolling and shore fishing, with nights spent camping in this magical unspoiled wilderness.

The Sinai

Covering some 23,000 miles², the Sinai stretches from the Mediterranean in the north to the Red Sea in the south and is bordered by Israel to the east. The landscape of desert, sporadic green oases and rugged multi-coloured mountains and canyons is spectacular, as are the sunrises and sunsets. For decades the region was under occupation but today is increasingly accessible to visitors, especially the south. A highlight here is the ancient St. Catherine’s Monastery, which was founded by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. Accommodation in the Sinai is extremely limited, so most visits are done as day tours from the Red Sea resorts.

El Alamein

Some 100km along the coast to the west of Alexandria lies El Alamein, setting for the critical and decisive British victory in the North Africa campaign of 1940/43, when the British Eighth Army under Montgomery halted the advance of the German Afrika Corps under Rommel towards the Nile. Today one can visit the illuminating Alamein Museum, the underground Military Hospital, the starkly beautiful British and Commonwealth Cemetery, the German and Italian cemeteries and, to the south, the salt marshes of the Qattara Depression. The comfortable Hilton Borg el Arab Hotel, mid-way between Alexandria and El Alamein, is the perfect base from which to explore.
