Classical Libya

Legacy of the Greek and Roman Empires

Uncover some of the most spectacular and well-preserved Greek, Roman and Byzantine archaeological remains on this journey of discovery through Libya.

The journey begins in Tripoli where the National Museum is filled with exquisite statuary and mosaics, and Mussolini’s imposing buildings shadow the ancient Medina. Flying east to Benghazi, a drive along the beautiful coastline brings you to the well-preserved ruins of the Greek city of Cyrene, and Apollonia with its Greek, Roman and Byzantine remains.

Back in Tripoli, the climax of your journey is a visit to the magnificent Roman city of Leptis Magna. With its beautifully preserved remains, which include the Great Circus, the Hadrianic baths and the Severan basilica, Leptis is considered by many to be the greatest archaeological site in the world today. Subject to restoration work, you may also be able see the exquisite mosaics at the Byzantine Villa Silin nearby.
