Oman à la Carte

Oman à la Carte

Oman has much to offer beyond Muscat. As one of the oldest civilisations on the Arabian Peninsula, the Sultanate is blessed with a rich cultural heritage together with extraordinary natural beauty. Oman ‘a la carte’ offers just small selection of what else this fascinating country has to offer.

Nizwa

Nizwa, one-time capital and birthplace of Islam in Oman, is one of the oldest cities in the Sultanate. It has a wealth of ancient and cultural landmarks, most prominent being its fortress which is surrounded by ancient traditional souqs. The city is also within easy reach of the beautiful 17th century Jabrin fort, Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) and Jebel Shams, Arabia's highest mountain. Nizwa can be visited on a day trip from Muscat, or, for those wanting to spend a bit longer exploring the area, there are two hotels - The Falaj Daris and the Golden Tulip. Both offer good basic en suite accommodation, their own restaurants serving local Omani food, and a swimming pool.

The Wahiba Sands

This unique desert covers an area of some 10,000km², stretching from the eastern Hajar Mountains to the Arabian Sea. With some dunes reaching up to 200 metres high and colours ranging across the spectrum from white to red, this sea of sand is a photographer’s delight especially at sunrise and sunset. At night, the inky sky, brilliant stars and deafening silence are incredible. 1000 Nights camp offers a true Omani desert experience with guests sleeping in Bedouin style tents and are able to enjoy the true silence of the desert at night. Desert Nights Resort is a new and more upmarket camp offering air conditioning and a chance to go dune bashing.

Empty Quarter

Covering some 650,000km² and uninhabited except for Bedouin who skirt the edges, the Empty Quarter is one of the most forbidding environments on earth. With dunes taller than the Eiffel Tower and summer temperatures rising to 55° celsius, it remains comparatively unexplored and a challenge for any traveller. Adventurous journeys explore Oman's most remote and unspoiled corners, with 'off the beaten track’ expeditions journeying through the mountains, into the awesome red dunes of the Empty Quarter, before reaching the unspoiled coast and azure sea. Each night a tented camp will be set up beneath the stars in the most dramatic and extraordinarily beautiful surroundings.

Salalah & The Dhofar

Situated in the far south of Oman, the city of Salalah is a popular destination. Known as the ‘perfume capital of Arabia’ for its abundance of frankincense trees, the city also has the natural attractions of the Dhofar region - the Qara Mountains, dramatic Indian Ocean coastline and long deserted sandy beaches. Salalah enjoys a tropical climate, which leaves the mountains and countryside lush and green. Apart from the landscape and ancient sites of this fascinating region, there is also excellent bird watching or diving to be enjoyed. The comfortable Hilton or Crowne Plaza hotels are the perfect base from which to explore this fascinating and beautiful region.
