Colombia

An intoxicating country rich in colonial architecture, natural beauty and vibrant culture, Colombia has long remained a neglected travel destination within much visited South America. After years of civil conflict Colombia is now safe to visit, and this diverse country has much to offer for a fresh, unique tailor-made travel experience.

Located in northwestern South America, Colombia is the continent's only country with coastlines stretching out into the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The country has diverse regions, climates and cultures, from the urban towns in the highlands of the Andes to the laid back vibe and sun-drenched shores of the Carribbean coast.  The startling contrast of Colombia's many geographical variants poses the perfect setting for a compelling travel experience. The country exudes a warm, exotic allure that due to its slow emergence as a travel destination, remains a rewarding discovery of somewhere new and exciting to visitors.

Bogota, the country's capital with its cool, highland climate,  provides the geographical heart and industrial, political and economic epicentre of the country.  With an instantly felt colonial influence, the city's historic centre, Le Candeleria boasts beautiful churches, cafes and museums, while the highly modernised northern areas of the city provide a stark contrast.  Colombia is a country synonymous with the coffee-trade and the cities of Pereira, Manizales and Armenia all make good bases from which to explore the lush green hills of the coffee growing region and from which to make a trip to the plantations.

A visit to the Caribbean coast will lead you to Cartagena, a UNESCO world heritage site with an undeniably dreamlike quality guaranteed to win over any traveller.  Wander aimlessly through the charming cobbled streets, take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the leafy courtyards and enjoy a drink in the open-air cafes.  There is much to admire in Cartagena, and even more atmosphere to bask in;  this historic city with its colonial architecture and enchanting demeanour will certainly prove difficult to leave. Also located on the Caribbean coast is Tayrona National Park, 30 square kilometres of overwhelming natural beauty.  With rugged coastlines, tropical jungle interior and a wide array of wildlife, an overnight stay in Tayrona provides an idyllic opportunity for long beachside walks, and peaceful stargazing by night.
