Mainland Ecuador

Mainland Ecuador

Ecuador is not just the Galapagos Islands. Although these enchanted isles are undoubtedly the jewel in Ecuador’s crown, the mainland attractions of this beautiful and diverse South American country should not be overlooked and can be readily combined with a Galapagos cruise.

Quito

Ecuador’s capital and a bustling, friendly city of narrow streets and beautiful colonial architecture surrounded by the snow-capped volcanic peaks of the Andean Cordillera. Tours of the city and the surrounding countryside can easily be arranged, while further afield an excursion to the famed Otavalo Market is highly recommended and offers a good insight into daily Andean life. One can stay here at Cusin, an enchanting and traditionally run hacienda.

Haciendas

For the definitive Andean experience, stay at one of Ecuador’s enchanting haciendas - properties such as Pinsaqui, Cusin and San Agustin de Callo are all owner-run and offer an intimate insight into the cultural traditions and natural history of the High Andes.

The Andean highlands

The best way to explore the Andean highlands of central Ecuador is to make the journey aboard the ‘Chiva Express’ from Quito to Cuenca. The journey takes you by road and rail south through the spectacular Avenue of Volcanoes and the Cotopaxi National Park to the Indian market town of Riobamba, then on to the Inca ruins at Ingapirca and finally down the ‘Devil’s Nose’ to the beautiful Spanish colonial town of Cuenca.

The Amazon Basin

The rainforests of the upper Amazon Basin offer a very different but complementary wildlife experience to that of the Galapagos Islands. This vast ‘green carpet’ is laced with rivers and streams and provides shelter for an astonishing and colourful array of flora and fauna. Within easy reach of Quito (a short flight to Coca then a longer journey down river by motorized canoe) there are several places to choose from which offer the complete Amazon experience. These include Sacha and Napo Wildlife Centre, both wonderful jungle lodges located in the heart of the primary rainforest, where there is every chance of seeing macaws, parrots, toucans, caimans and even river dophins.

Adventure - riding, trekking and white-water rafting

The Ecuadorian Andes have much to offer the adventure enthusiast. Riding, in particular, is one of the country’s most enduring traditions - many of the haciendas stable their own horses, or you can join one of Sally Vergette’s wonderful RideAndes treks where nights are spent en route under canvas or in local hosterias. The Cajas National Park, a region of crystal-clear lakes and stunning lunar landscapes, possibly offers the best trekking, while whitewater enthusiasts will enjoy the challenge of the Toachi River. Guided ascents of the volcanoes, such as Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, can also be arranged.
