The Ayeyarwady Experience

The Ayeyarwady Experience

Explore the true beauty of Burma's Pagoda's with this cruise down the Ayeyarwady River, where you will discover some of the most beautiful and fascinating sights of South East Asia.

Burma, long hidden from view is now showing itself to be one of Indochina’s great beauties.

Much of that beauty lines the banks of the Ayeyarwady, the river running through the heart of a country whose landscape remains unchanged. Seeing Burma in slow motion from the deck of a river boat is a truly memorable experience, and as Belmond's (Orient-Express) Orcaella begins its week long journeys from Yangon to Bagan, passengers are invited to travel back in time.

Before sailing, two nights are spent at the 1920’s Governor’s Residence, in the old colonial capital of Rangoon. Supremely comfortable, the hotel is just minutes from the spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda.

Once on board, cruising at a gentle pace, there is time to visit the battlegrounds of the Anglo-Burmese war and the bespectacled Buddha at Sri Ksetra. Discover the cliff carvings at Akauk Taung, travel to a hidden village on a traditional ox-cart, and see the sunrise and set over the ‘Pagoda City’ of Bagan. Often eerily shrouded in mist, the site of these many hundreds of temples is regarded as one of the great wonders of the world.

A cruise on the Orcaella is a wonderful way to experience the Ayeyarwady region of Burma and a perfect introduction to what one travel writer described as ‘……….the most beautiful country I have ever seen’.

Swapping the serenity of Burma for the buzz of Bangkok may not seem a fitting end to such an historic journey, but a final two nights at the legendary Mandarin Oriental promises to bring the curtain down in style on the holiday of a lifetime.
