Discovering Nicaragua

My journey took me on a whistle-stop tour, taking in the historical cities of Granada and Leon, and the stunning beaches of San Juan Del Sur. One property I was most intrigued to visit was the Jicaro Eco-Lodge located on its own private island just 20 minutes away from Granada. I was greeted by the warm and friendly smiles of the staff ready and waiting with delicious cocktails. I had just enough time to reach the top of the observation tower and witness the most incredible sunset, with the mighty Mombacho volcano forming an incredible backdrop against the burnt red sky.

There are over 27 volcanoes dotted around the country, and on my last day I made the hike up to the top of Cerro Negro, where I was kitted out in an orange jumpsuit in preparation for some serious ash-boarding. It was without a doubt one of the most terrifying and adrenalin-fuelled moments of my life but I'm glad I tried it; it's not every day you get to surf down an active volcano!

Besides the volcanoes, the other images which now spring to mind when I reminisce of Nicaragua are old crumbling colonial towns with brightly coloured houses, horse and carts, beautiful old churches, the eclectic street market stalls, the stunning white sandy beaches and the warmth of the local people.
