Kenya Revisited
I had not been back to Kenya since I worked in the Masai Mara some five years ago, so it was with great excitement that I stepped off the aeroplane in Nairobi.
The wonderful thing about Kenya is that it has great diversity in its wildlife, landscapes and, most importantly for me, its people. The Kenyan people, in the rural areas, still live a very tribal existence and are passionate about their heritage. This cultural element adds a unique edge to what is already a great wildlife safari.

There are so many beautiful National Parks, National Reserves and private concession areas, which means that there are endless combinations for a good Kenyan itinerary. In our experience it works well to combine an area where game is plentiful with a contrasting ecosystem where there is perhaps less game, but where you can do a variety of different activities from game walks, camel safaris, sleep outs, river swimming or community visits.
On my travels I saw some wonderful camps and lodges that all varied quite considerably in terms of luxury and general atmosphere. The guides were excellent throughout my trip and they have left me with some fantastic memories such as visiting the kopje where George Adamson first saw Elsa the lion; visiting a Samburu community; tracking lion on foot in Laikipia; swimming in the Indian Ocean; marvelling at the initial signs of the migration in the Masai Mara; as well as seeing one of only eighteen wild black rhino in the Mara - a humbling and incredibly rare sight!
