The village of Oberammergau, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Bavarian Alps in Southern Germany, is renowned the world over for the Passion Play which takes place here every 10 years in thanksgiving for deliverance from the Plague in 1633. This is a unique opportunity to attend a remarkable event, and also encompasses some of the region's other artistic, architectural and cultural treasures.

We begin with a visit to the Benedictine Abbey of Ettal with its rich Rococo interiors, before arriving at our hotel in the picturesque market town of Murnau where world-renowned Expressionist painters found inspiration.  Next day, after a walking tour of Oberammergau, we attend the performance of the Passion Play.  The event involves over 2000 villagers as performers, musicians and designers.

The tour continues with visits to Schloss Linderhof, an intimate neo-Rococo palace built by the eccentric King Ludwig II, the Wieskirche - a fine Rococo-style pilgrimage church near Füssen, and the Abbey of Steingaden.  A day will be spent in Augsburg, one of the richest Renaissance towns in Europe.  Here we shall see the 16th century almshouses of the Fuggerei, the Cathedral, the art galleries and elaborate banqueting hall of the Schaezlerpalais.  We follow in the footsteps of Kandinsky and Münter with visits to the Münterhaus and Schlossmuseum, before ending with the post-war abstract works housed in the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See.

Day 1: Wednesday, 9th June

London / Munich / Murnau
Depart London Heathrow on a Lufthansa morning flight to Munich.

Transfer to the traditional Hotel Klausenhof am Kurpark in Murnau, a picturesque market town in the foothills of the Alps, where four nights are spent.  On the way, visit the lovely Benedictine abbey of Ettal, founded by Ludwig of Bavaria in 1330.  Like many other churches in the area, it now has a splendid Baroque interior.  Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Thursday, 10th June

Murnau, Oberammergau & The Passion Play
Depart in the morning for Oberammergau.  Guided walk in the town centre.

Lunch at a local restaurant.  The performance of The Passion Play commences after lunch, starting with Christ's Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem.  There is a late afternoon interval lasting three hours, during which there will be dinner at a restaurant.  The performance then continues to the Resurrection. It was in 1633 that the local council vowed that if the village were spared further suffering in the Plague, the drama would be staged every 10 years.  The first play was duly performed in 1634.  In 1680 the date was changed to the first year of the decade.  Return to the hotel in Murnau after the performance.

Day 3: Friday, 11th June

Murnau, Schloss Linderhof, Die Wies & Steingaden Abbey
Drive to visit Ludwig II's ornate palace of Linderhof, set in Italianate gardens in a secluded alpine valley.

Lunch at the Schlosshotel Linderhof.  In the afternoon compare the Wieskirche, one of the loveliest masterpieces of the Rococo style, with the abbey of Steingaden, which has an elegant 18th-century interior.  Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4: Saturday, 12th June

Murau & Augsburg
Full day in Augsburg, one of the richest Renaissance towns in Europe.  Visit the Fuggerei, or 16th-century almshouses, and the Municipal Art Gallery and splendid Rococo Banqueting Hall in the Schätzler Palace.
