Summer
"Summer afternoon - Summer afternoon... the two most beautiful words in the English language." - Henry James
June, July and August
Many families with children of school-age have to travel in the school holidays and although a lot of short-haul destinations such as Europe are in their peak season, many of the long-haul destinations are not best visited in the summer months. Here are our suggestions for summer travelers:
Africa & Arabia: East Africa, Central Africa, Namibia and northern South Africa are all good destinations in the summer months (Kenya & Tanzania best from July onwards). In North Africa most countries are okay in June but too hot after that.
Indian Ocean: Mozambique is possible but temperatures are a little cooler but Madagascar is fine to visit in the summer months. Mauritius and Seychelles are cooler but with less rainfall.
Central America & Caribbean : Although it is technically the rainy season, Mexico can be visited in June or July before the threat of hurricanes becomes a reality in mid-August. Other Central American countries are not recommended at this time of year.
South America: Ecuador and the Galapagos (better in early summer), Peru, Bolivia and Brazil are all good destinations at this time.
South-East Asia: Borneo is good to visit throughout the summer.
China & Japan: China is a possibility in the summer.
The Arctic: Summer is the only time to visit the Arctic when the pack ice has melted sufficiently to permit access.
