I once travelled on the Orient Express train from Bangkok to Singapore - it is the kind of luxury I love!. And yet one of my most enjoyable trips was at the other end of the scale, when I trekked in Nepal to the Annapurna Sanctuary. I remember the whole trip so vividly - the dramatic scenery, the freshness of the air, the toils of the trek, the simplicity of the camps. My photos always bring back fond memories.

My fondest memory is of being surrounded by traditionally dressed hill tribe children whilst trekking around the incredibly picturesque village of Sapa in North Vietnam. They shrieked in delight as they realised I could capture their image on a digital camera and then show it to them, reminding me of how happy they seemed without the need for modern technology. In their excitement I was given a chunk of raw sugar cane to chew on while I admired the surrounding rice terraces and views of Mount Fansipan.

My passion for the Indian subcontinent began shortly after leaving school when I lived in Nepal for 5 months, working in a local school and taking advantage of the wonderful trekking opportunities. Later whilst studying Anthropology at university, I also lived in Kerala for three months where I undertook research for my dissertation. Since then I have used every excuse to get back there and have now travelled extensively throughout this vibrant part of the world - I doubt I could ever tire of its sights, sounds and smells!

I think one's first travel experience leaves the greatest impression. I will never forget the wonder, awe and shock I felt on arrival in India in 1990. The realisation that such incredible places actually exist in this world launched my enduring love of travel. In the subsequent years I have revisted India several times including working for a year as a tour leader. During all that time there was never a day when I wanted to be anywhere else. I cannot recommend India enough.
