An Invitation to Il N’gwesi

An Invitation to Il N’gwesi An Invitation to Il N’gwesi
£ 2880

Spend an exclusive week with Nigel Winser, a Kenyan born environmental scientist at the very special and comfortable II Ngwesi lodge in Northern Kenya. For his long association with the Il N’gwesi Maasai Community in northern Kenya, he has recently been made an ‘honorary elder’.

This beautiful lodge is real Africa run by the local community in real Africa. No other tourists, wild country, large skys, good game, thriving Masai community and few rules! Game drives, walks, bush breakfasts, dawn visits, sundowners, sleep in the Bush, all possible.

Il N’gwesi means ‘People of Wildlife’ and is the first community owned conservancy in Kenya. In partnership with the local community - developing Kenya and preserving wildlife outside the parks, Il N’gwesi Lodge, on Il N’gwesi Group Ranch in Northern Kenya, opened in 1996 and involves the Maasai people of the area in wildlife preservation to the benefit of both with profits being put back into the local communities. The Ranch maintains traditional use of the land, whilst offering safe refuge and freedom of movement to the wild animals.

The Lodge is on a small hill and overlooks the vast landscape of Kenya's northern district, unspoiled land where no light shines and only the chorus of the African bush is heard at night. A water hole with viewing platform offers a chance to watch the elephants and other animals coming in to drink. Over the last 20 years, the conservancy has become a biodiversity haven for birds and other wildlife, thanks to the conservation efforts of the Il Ngwesi community. This includes elephant, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, warthogs, the long-necked gerenuk and the ever-present dik-dik. If we are lucky, we may see painted dogs, lion and the resident white rhino.

Suggested flight. Depart London Heathrow at 10:20 with British Airways (BA 65) to Nairobi. Flight not included in the price. Arrive at 21:00 and transfer to the Tamarind Tree Hotel for one night. Bed and Breakfast.

Morning transfer to Wilson Airport for your private chartered flight to Lewa Downs. On arrival you will be met by Nigel and James and transferred to Il N’gwesi Lodge. A stunning game drive taking around two and a half hours, across the Ngare Ndare river into the renowned Il N’gwesi conservancy, a haven for the distinctive savannah wildlife of the Samburu region of North Kenya.

Enjoy the traditional Maasai hospitality, the opportunity to get close to the savannah wildlife of Samburu, the comfort of the thatched lodges with their stunning views – and the opportunity to watch elephant and other wildlife come to the water hole from the lodge bar or by the pool.

With game-drive plans each evening depending on how energetic you wish to be – or not as the case may be. For the intrepid, one can get up before dawn and head to the river, sitting quietly under the stars, to watch the sun rise and listen to the Il Ngwesi dawn chorus, followed by a bush breakfast. For the fit, walking with the rangers and guides before the sun gets too high, is a feature of the holiday. Guided walks and a visit to a nearby Maasai manyatta (village) can be arranged.

Seven nights at Il N’gwesi on a full board basis, inclusive of safari activities.

This afternoon you will be transferred to Wilson airport. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Nairobi International Airport, via supper at the Talisman (not included). • Ayesha was patient and informative. Her skills became even more apparent on the holiday - such as the order of the hotels, which were each perfect for that moment.
