Kenya’s sprawling capital is often overlooked as a stopover between a safari or beach stay, but stay a while and you’ll discover a number of fantastic attractions worth at least a few days exploration.
Over the past century Nairobi has transformed itself from a rail depot to a buzzing metropolis with wide, vibrant streets that invite exploration. As well as plenty of shops, bars and restaurants don’t miss out on the lively ‘Maasai markets’ that sell everything from colourful fabrics to ceramics – perfect for souvenir shopping.
The majority of Nairobi’s top attractions are located in the upmarket suburbs of Karen and Langata in the south-west of the city. These include the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage where visitors have the opportunity to observe and interact with baby elephants, and the Giraffe Centre where you can learn about the conservation of the endangered Rothschild Giraffes and feed them from a raised wooden structure.
The city is enclosed by over 110 square kilometres of forested plains, streams and grassland that make up the Nairobi National Park. In this huge wilderness you can expect to find an array of wildlife, from herds of zebra to prowling lions and majestic giraffes. The park also boasts a large population of black rhinos and over 400 species of bird.
