Best Time to Visit Rwanda

Rwanda sits just south of the Equator, and as a result temperatures remain largely the same throughout the year. Days are typically sunny and warm with cooler nights – especially in high altitude areas.

Rwanda is a year-round destination, but the best time to observe mountain gorillas are the drier months between June and September. The weather during this time is pleasant – despite the occasional shower – and wildlife sightings are common, making this the most popular and expensive time to travel. That said gorilla tracking can still be enjoyed in the rainy season, and you may be able to take advantage of great deals and discounts on permits. Just be sure to pack some good rain gear!

For those looking to spot chimpanzees, the optimal time is during the rainy periods from March to May and from June to September. This is because the chimps will often venture down to the lower reaches of the forest canopy in order to feast on the ripe fruit, allowing for some excellent sightings.

For photographers or those wishing to enjoy some beautiful mountain scenery, Rwanda’s landscapes are at their most scenic in October and November. Quick showers make way for clear blue skies and the mountains are carpeted in lush vegetation.
