You’ll spend five days in a small group exploring remote bush with an expert naturalist and animal tracker. You’ll ford rivers, climb escarpments and sleep in a mobile safari tent deep in the wilderness.
And you’ll see lion, leopard, elephants, hippos, buffalo, exotic birds…and the fascinating tiny creatures you might miss in a 4x4 vehicle.
London – Johannesburg – Lusaka – Mfuwe
Fly from London in the evening, arriving in Johannesburg the next day to meet your connecting flight to Lusaka. From there you’ll take a scheduled flight to Mfuwe where you’ll be met and driven for an hour through local villages, farmlands and African bush until you reach Nkwali on the banks of the Luangwa River. Here your African adventure really begins with afternoon and/or evening game drives into the surrounding bush.
Stay: One night at Nkwali Safari Camp.
South Luangwa National Park
South Luangwa National Park stands between the Luangwa River and the end of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, and is reputedly one of the least spoiled wilderness areas on the continent; a wildlife sanctuary stretching over 9000 sq km. And Robin Pope Safaris will help you make the most of the game-viewing opportunities the location offers.
Over the next five days you’ll embark on a series of leisurely walks – not more than 10 km a day – following the Mupamadz River, a tributary of the Luangwa. Along the way you’ll discover a host of intriguing and often spectacular creatures ranging from ants to buffalo. You’ll be followed by a luxurious, full service, mobile camp as you track lions and examine birds’ nests, watch hippos yawning in their mud baths and see fish eagles and great storks hunting in the river’s shallows.
Antelope of all kinds and great herds of buffalo will reveal themselves as they come down to the water to drink. Your expert naturalist and guide will point out prides of lion half-hidden in the shadows beneath spreading trees. And you’ll see exotic birds and rare and camera-shy creatures as you stroll slowly across the landscape. It’s a fascinating experience and you’ll have the sensation of being part of the natural life of one of Africa’s untouched wildernesses. Each day you’ll set off in a different direction, and each day you’ll gather different insights into the creatures and indigenous plants of South Luangwa National Park.
Stay: Five nights in different locations in a mobile safari camp.
Today you walk over to Tena Tena Camp set in the remote Nsefu region of South Luangwa National Park. Tena Tena is an authentic safari camp set on the banks of the Luangwa, within a grove of shady trees. So it’s the ideal place to sit on your tented veranda and watch a range of animals coming to the opposite bank of the river to drink. Tena Tena’s expert guides will take you to the region’s best bird watching spots, whilst a typical safari will present you with mobs of hippos, large numbers of wild elephants, herds of buffalo and families of zebras – naturally stalked by lion and leopards.
Stay: One night at Tena Tena Camp.
Mfuwe – Lusaka – Johannesburg – London
