The Rainbow Nation certainly offers you a multi-coloured set of experiences, especially with the freedom of a self-drive adventure. You can soak up the atmosphere of Cape Town and its surroundings.
The seascape views from Table Mountain, the quaint Dutch- gabled architecture of old Cape Town and the sophisticated restaurants of the marina. Then there are the wineries of Franschhoek, the scenery of the Garden Route, the birdlife of Plettenburg Bay and the game-rich reserve of exclusive Sabi Sands.
Perfect – especially as the pound/rand exchange rate makes South Africa a supremely affordable indulgence.
Day 1 – 2: Fly to Cape Town, where you’ll be met and shown to your hire car, ready to drive into Cape Town.
Day 3 – 5: Make sure you take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain as soon as the sky is clear – when the ‘tablecloth’ is on, the clouds obscure the fantastic city-and-sea view. Don’t miss Cape Point, where the mighty Atlantic and Indian Oceans collide. Cape Town itself features many period buildings, and a busy nightlife collected around the marina.
Stay: Four nights at the Welgelegen Hotel.
After the winelands you drive to the beautiful Plettenburg Bay, a special treat for birdwatchers with its huge seabird colony. Using the Emily Moon Hotel as your base you can explore the Garden Route – reputedly one of the most visually stunning journeys along the South African coastline, winding along between the ocean, lagoons, lakes and lush countryside, with mountains marching along in the background.
