An enchanting lakeside retreat backed by the richly forested Mahale Mountains, Greystoke Mahale was made for the intrepid traveller, combining world-class chimpanzee viewing with ‘Robinson Crusoe’ remoteness.
Sprawled along a white sandy beach in one of the most beautiful national parks in all of Africa, Greystoke Mahale feels far removed from the outside world with no roads to be found within a hundred miles. Nestled into the forest line are the six guest ‘bandas’, all made out of old dhow wood and open-fronted to allow for uninterrupted views across Lake Tanganyika. The upstairs ‘relaxation’ deck is the perfect spot to unwind between forays into the forest.
Naturally, encounters with the wild chimpanzees of Mahale are the focal point of the Greystoke experience. Expert trackers and knowledgeable guides will lead you along winding forest trails in search of these playful creatures – whilst also keeping an eye out for the forest’s eight other primate species, its unusual insects, medicinal plants and colourful birds.
After an exciting day of chimp viewing, you can retreat to the communal guest area on the beach known as ‘The Mess’ where you’ll find cosy sitting spaces, a dining area, library and bar. Fishing, kayaking and relaxing afternoon boat rides on the lake are also a must.
