Especially if you’re a keen fan of expressive primates and noisy birds. This tour takes you from Entebbe to the remote Kibale Forest in the Bunyaruguru Crater region, where you’ll track chimpanzees and colobus monkeys and see a variety of exotic birds.
Queen Elizabeth National Park continues the theme of wildlife-rich yet visitor-scarce landscapes, but one of the main high points of your safari has to be meeting gorillas – the gentle giants of the evocatively-named Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
London – Dubai – Entebbe – Kibale Forest
You fly out of London in the evening, arriving in Dubai the following morning. Your connecting flight takes you to Entebbe in Uganda, where you’ll take an internal flight to Karese. Once landed you’ll be taken to Ndali Lodge, where you’ll be able to relax after your travels, swim in an inviting pool and soak up the beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. Now it’s time to start your adventure in the ‘Cradle of the Nile’.
You’re staying in the Bunyaruguru Crater region of Western Uganda – home to a fabulous display of wildlife, flora and fauna. You’ll track chimpanzees hunting though their natural habitat, as well as colobus monkeys and Sitatunga antelope in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Keen bird watchers can expect a range of species, including the impressive great blue turaco and rare papyrus gonoleks, whilst visits to local community projects will appeal to just about everyone.
Stay: Three nights in a twin room at Ndali Lodge.
From the outstanding Kibale Forest area you’ll be taken cross-country through the African landscape to an eco-lodge perched high above the Kyambura Gorge, giving magnificent views over the Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Rwenzori Mountains. You’ll take boat trips along the Kazinga Channel to see the wildlife that basks on the banks, or comes down to drink.
You’ll track chimps in the Kalinzu, with an experienced guide and embark on community walks to meet local people. And you’ll set off on early morning and afternoon game drives to photograph prides of lions, leopards and great herds of Ugandan kob.
Stay: Three nights in a double room at Kyambura Gorge Lodge.
Today you set off into gorilla country as your safari takes you into the primeval Bwindi Forest. And along the way you’ll be able to see tree-climbing lions and appreciate magnificent countryside – some of it making for rugged travelling! Your accommodation is comfortable though; you’ll be staying in the only luxury lodge in Bwindi National Park, with uninterrupted views of the towering forest and impressive river.
Naturally, meeting gorillas in the wild is the main reason for visiting Bwindi – and an encounter with a silverback is indeed a thrilling experience – but the park has other attractions too. The birdlife is wonderful and the flora of the forest equally fascinating. You’ll also have the chance to meet the local community, as well trekking through dense forest in search of the gentle giants.
Stay: Three nights in a double room at Bwindi Lodge.
