‘THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS’

Stretching across the Zambia and Zimbabwe borders, the thundering Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known locally as the Mosi-oa-Tunya, or ‘The Smoke That Thunders’, this is nature at its finest.

So breath-taking are the Victoria Falls that explorer David Livingstone, upon discovering them in 1855, said “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. Since then the falls has continued to inspire and amaze, and is a must-see on any trip to Zambia or Zimbabwe.

The sheer scale of this mighty landmark is astonishing. The waters of the Zambezi River plunge across the lip of the cliff, forming a mile-long curtain of cascades that drop down into a 100m deep gorge. The roar of the falls can be heard from miles away, whilst the clouds of spray rising from the ravine can reach heights of 400m.

Take in the magnificence of the Victoria Falls on an enchanting sunset river cruise, or soar above the falls in a helicopter ride known as the ‘flight of angels’. For something more heart-racing, try bungee jumping, white water rafting or brave the Devil’s Pool at Livingstone Island which sits on the very edge of the drop.

The accessibility of the Victoria Falls means it is an ideal spot to start or end your safari. Get in contact with one of our Africa experts who will be able to create your very own tailor-made itinerary.
