Director Rowan Paterson highlights six properties that will take your African safari to a whole new level...

"Safari accommodation has come a long way from the modest tents of the explorers of old. Today, the likes of Puku Ridge in Zambia and Tuludi in Botswana are taking the African safari to new heights with indulgent spas, top-of-the-range vehicles, bespoke excursions and fine, gourmet dining. All without sacrificing that authentic sense of adventure. We have picked out six brand-new, bar-raising lodges that are redefining the safari experience." Rowan Patterson, Director

Sonop Namibia

Sonop - Namibia

Sister lodge to Omaanda, and spectacularly set in the southern reaches of the Namib, Sonop’s refined tents echo the classic style of a 1920s safari camp with antique furnishings, roll-up canvas and writing desks. When you’re not tracking desert-adapted wildlife on horseback, you can unwind in the cosy cigar lounge over cocktails and billiards. The gastronomic restaurant serves elegant, gala-style meals.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge - Rwanda

Singita Kwitonda Lodge - Rwanda

A leader in sustainable luxury tourism, Singita Kwitonda Lodge is committed to the preservation of Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorilla. Guests enjoy unforgettable gorilla and golden monkey treks in the neighbouring Volcanoes National Park, with village visits and wine tastings also on the menu. The lodge’s eight suites showcase the work of local artisans, as well as stunning volcano views.

Tuludi Botswana

Tuludi - Botswana

Perfectly positioned for beautiful sunsets across the floodplains, Tuludi's guests have exclusive access to over 200,000 hectares of wilderness on the fringes of the Okavango Delta. Accommodation consists of just seven spacious, treehouse-style rooms with high canvas roofs, outdoor showers and private pools. In the camp's common area, you can watch passing wildlife from the comfort of plush armchairs and cushions.

Puku Ridge

Puku Ridge - Zambia

Recently transformed under new ownership, Puku Ridge offers the definitive South Luangwa experience. In addition to multi-level verandas and under-the-stars dining, there are game drives in custom-built 4x4s and absorbing walking safaris with top-level guides, who have twice won the award for the ‘Best Guiding Team in Africa’.

Omaanda - Namibia

Omaanda - Namibia

Stylish Omaanda lies at the heart of Namibia’s exclusive Zannier Reserve. With experienced guides at the helm, guests are led on personalised excursions and species-specific game drives including rhino and elephant tracking. Back at the lodge, you can indulge in a pampering spa treatment or withdraw to the luxury of your thatched hut with its walk-in shower, cosy fireplace and private terrace.

Mara Nyika - Kenya

Mara Nyika - Kenya

From June 2020, Mara Nyika will be reconfigured to boast six luxuriously appointed suites - one of which will come with its own butler, chef, safari vehicle and guide. Bordering the Maasai Mara reserve, the camp sits on the private Naboisho Conservancy which supports some 500 Maasai families. Activities here include enthralling game drives, bird watching and hot air ballooning.
