You might find yourself exploring the mini ecosystems created by some of the country’s largest lakes, visiting a self-sustaining coffee plantation or wandering the beautiful streets of Granada and Leon – two of the oldest Spanish settlements in the Americas. The birdwatching here is superb, whilst the aptly named Emerald Coast is perfect for some downtime.

They’re all unforgettable experiences, but Nicaragua has one more sensation to offer you – the feeling of being one of the few. The country isn’t overwhelmed by tourists, and remains charmingly un-commercialised – which means more space for you on one of San Juan del Sur’s delightful beaches.

A week in Nicaragua makes for a great standalone holiday, but you can always combine with neighbouring Costa Rica for an extra dose of adventure, nature and wildlife.
