Explore the surrounding countryside to discover small villages reminiscent of the China of old, and venture to the north to find stunning scenery featuring the mighty Yangtze River and the Tiger Leaping Gorge.
Get another taste for traditional Chinese living in Dali, the ancient Bai minority capital. Easily explored on foot, the Old Town boasts classic stone architecture, a myriad of cafes and scenic views all around. Head up to the Cangshan Mountains for fresh air and terrific hiking, and make time to see the beautiful Erhai Lake.
Continue north to Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) to discover a world of snow-capped peaks, small Tibetan villages and welcoming locals. The adventurous will find plenty to do in the surrounding mountains, whilst the 300-year old Songzanlin Monastery makes for an interesting visit.
