Chilean Lake District

waterfalls, wild green forests, volcanoes and deep glacial lakes

If you love the type of scenery that includes waterfalls, wild green forests, volcanoes and deep glacial lakes filled with blue water, then you will love the Chilean Lake District. It’s an area fit for gentle hikes, epic bike rides and cruises across serene waters.

Stretching between Temuco to Puerto Montt, Chile’s Lake District encompasses some truly mesmerising natural scenery that is often compared to Switzerland. Its scenic highlights include impossibly blue mountain lakes, snowy volcanic peaks and clusters of monkey puzzle trees.

But the Lake District is also a place for those who yearn for adventure. In the north of the region you’ll find Pucon, a lively town perched on the shores of Lago Villarrica and lying in the shadow of the Villarrica Volcano. Here you can brave rushing rapids by going white-water rafting, hike with a guide through the pristine Huerquehue National Park, or even tackle the slopes of the volcano.

The southern town of Puerto Varas is another prime location for enjoying an array of activities, as well as offering outstanding views of the twin volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco. From Puerto Varas it’s possible to take day trips to the world-renowned Vicente Perez Rosales National Park and Chiloé Island – an intriguing place steeped in folklore and centuries-old tradition.

After a long day’s adventure, few things are more relaxing than soaking in one of the regions volcanic hot springs.
