An enchanting property set in beautiful grounds on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, Villa Bentota was one of the country’s first ever boutique hotels.

This converted colonial bungalow was originally designed by acclaimed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, who was first drawn to the property in the 1970s when it was known as ‘Mohotti Walauwa’. It has since been extensively refurbished and is now an inspired boutique hotel and member of the KK Collection family. Its 15 individually styled rooms are designed to soothe and indulge, and include the timber-panelled Mohotti Suite with its beautifully draped antique four-poster bed and sunken living area.

Amidst the hotel’s vast lawned gardens you’ll find two coconut-framed swimming pools – one of which is a courtyard pool dedicated for families. Across the charming old railway line at the bottom of the garden lays a white sand beach which, if you walk along it, will lead you into the main town and its buzzing cafes and restaurants. The onsite Villa Cafe is also worth exploring, with a menu that showcases a blend of traditional Sri Lankan, Western and fusion cuisine.
