BHUTAN’S SPIRITUAL HEART

The Bumthang district, with its ancient palaces, timeless temples and wonderful landscapes, is a fantastic addition to your Bhutan holiday. As you make your way through its sweeping valleys, you’ll encounter warm, welcoming people and traditions that haven’t changed for centuries.

Although made up of four major valleys (Ura, Chumey, Tang and Chokhor), the entire region is often referred to as the Bumthang Valley. It’s the spiritual heart of Bhutan and scattered with some of the oldest temples and monasteries in the country. It’s the place where Buddhism was first introduced to the kingdom, as well as the birthplace of many royal members of Bhutan’s monarchy.

In the beautiful Chokhor Valley there are a profusion of sacred site sites including the 17th century Jakar Dzong, the largest and one of the most impressive dzongs you’ll come across in Bhutan. As you make your way up to the site you’ll be able to drink in fabulous views over the valley. Make time, too, for the Wangdicholing Palace – the old summer residence of Bhutanese royalty – and the Jambey Lhakhang – one of the 108 monasteries built by King Songtsen Gampo.

The surrounding valleys and sloping mountains call out for on-foot exploration; with organic farms, peaceful villages and local craft producers to discover. We recommend a visit to the famous Red Panda beer distillery and swiss cheese factory, a perfect activity to finish on after a long days hike or sightseeing. One of the main attractions of Bumthang are the numerous thrilling festivals that are held throughout the year which offers a colourful insight into the Bhutanese culture.
