This delightful tour offers a fascinating introduction to Southern India, capturing the very essence of the region. It combines culture and tradition with ancient temples, the ever-present colonial history and architecture, and magnificent scenery.
We begin in Tamil Nadu and the city of Chennai (Madras), birthplace of the East India Company in 1639, before exploring the ancient shrines of Mahabalipuram. Moving south we explore the French colonial architecture and famous Ashram in Pondicherry, before journeying inland to Tanjore with its superb Brihadeshvera Temple and Nayak Palace museum, housing the finest treasures from the ‘Golden Age’ of Tamil history. After visiting the elaborate Chettinad merchant houses at Karaikudi, we continue to Madurai with its imposing temples, palaces and vibrant flower market.
Entering Kerala, we visit a spice garden and cardamom plantation at Thekkady and continue to the port of Cochin, famed for its magnificent fort, Chinese fishing nets, Jewish Quarter and Dutch Palace. Our remarkable journey ends with a cruise aboard a traditional rice barge on the picturesque waterways of the ‘backwaters’.
There is the option to extend our stay with two days of relaxation at the charming Marari Beach Resort in Maraikulam, on the shores of the Arabian Sea.
