Camellia Hills, Hill Country

Few of Sri Lanka’s boutique hotels can match Camellia Hills when it comes to location. Perched on the side of a mountain, the property looks out onto a sweeping landscape of tea-carpeted hillsides and the huge, mirror-like Castlereagh Reservoir.

Just five homely, timber-floored bedrooms make up this modern-day tea planter’s bungalow. All are individually decorated with white-tiled bathrooms, traditional wooden beams, four-poster beds and large picture windows, though the best views are reserved for the three Lakeview Bedrooms and their private garden terraces. The atmosphere in the dining room is relaxed, with deliciously prepared Sri Lankan dishes served indoors or on the breezy lake-facing terrace. The garden showcases a 10-metre infinity pool.

Using Camellia Hills as your base, you can set out to discover the area’s manicured tea estates, 100-year-old tea factories, colonial-era churches, hidden waterfalls and colourful Hindu shrines. White-water rafting and day trips to Nuwara Eliya can also be arranged, as well as picnics in scenic locations. The closest town to Camellia Hills is Dickoya, whilst the bustling market town of Hatton lies some 18 kilometres away.
