National Chambal Sanctuary

First established in 1979, the National Chambal Sanctuary is a vast protected area encompassing 5,400 square kilometres along the Chambal River in northern India. Known best for its rugged landscapes and rare wildlife, a visit here will transport you to an unspoiled land that, whilst geographically quite close, feels a world away from India’s bustling cities.

The sanctuary has a mix of habitats – from wetlands to woodlands – that together support a great variety of species. The endangered gharial crocodile is the sanctuary’s most famous resident, however countless other wildlife can be found here including the rare Gangetic dolphin, red-crowned roof turtle, smooth-coated otter, striped hyena, golden jackal, rhesus macaque, Indian wolf and mugger crocodile. It’s also a birders paradise with over 300 indigenous and migratory species including kingfishers, lapwings, greater flamingo, the black-bellied tern and the elusive Indian skimmer.

And when you’re not experiencing its rich biodiversity, Chambal also has peaceful villages, vibrant markets, temples and ancient ruins to explore and discover. To make it a part of your luxury, tailor-made holiday to India, simply get in touch with one of our experts today.
