From the solitude of the wide-open plains with their unbroken blue skies to the rich heritage of cities like Regina and Saskatoon, Canada’s prairie province of Saskatchewan is a joy to explore.

Bordered by Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, unassuming Saskatchewan has so much more to offer beyond its vast swathes of wheat fields. The province is often referred to as the ‘Land of the Living Skies’ thanks to its vibrant sunsets, beautiful cloud formations and stunning views of the Northern Lights.

The capital, Regina, makes a fitting start for your explorations. Here you can get an insight into the history of the province at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, take strolls around beautiful Wascana Lake and see ‘Mounties’ in training at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police academy. Nearby Moose Jaw is known for its colourful murals and rumoured Al Capone connections, whilst Saskatoon provides the perfect base for exploring the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a national historic site representing nearly 6,000 years of First Nations history.

Northern Saskatchewan is a natural playground studded with over 100,000 sparkling lakes. Immerse yourself in the rolling landscape of Cypress Hills, Canada’s first interprovincial park carpeted in fescue prairie and roamed by moose, deer and elk. As well as wildflowers and scenic viewpoints, the park is a designated Dark Sky Reserve, making for some truly exceptional stargazing. Prince Albert National Park, sprawling in central Saskatchewan, is also worth exploring with its wild bison, hiking trails and isolated forest lakes.
