A bit about me

I was born in Kerala and spent my early summer holidays on the Backwaters, Nilgiri and Cardamom hills, Goa and Lakshadweep Islands which really inspired my love for travel. I moved to Delhi and then the UK for university and continued to travel with my family.

I’ve worked at The Ultimate Travel Company since 2010 and I have really enjoyed discovering Bhutan and Sri Lanka which are similar in some ways to India but yet so different in many others.

My favourite place

Sri Lanka for the unbeatable combination of tropical island, Buddhist world heritage sites, tea and spice plantations, scenic hills, beautiful beaches as well as great wildlife and birds.

My favourite hotel

Ulagalla Resort in Sri Lanka. Set in 50 acres of paddy fields, lakes and wilderness near the first ancient capital of Anuradhapura. There are 20 impeccably stylish and private villas with plunge pools, sun terraces, all the modern comforts, great food and wine and the friendliest service. Each villa has two bicycles to explore the 50 acres and activities on-site include kayaking, archery and horse riding… I could live there!!

My most memorable experience

One of my earliest travel memories is from the Cardamom Hills in Kerala. Walking through the cardamom, clove and vanilla plantations, we arrived at our picnic spot on the banks of a gushing river swollen with the monsoon rains. My initial fright turned to absolute delight as we watched a herd of wild elephants frolicking on the opposite bank!

My top tips are

  • Visit Santushti in Delhi – a calm and green haven of swanky boutiques and cafes if you want to do some peaceful shopping.
  • Visit Kashi Art Café in Fort Cochin for a coffee, cake and well curated displays of excellent local artists.
  • Always carry wet wipes, and a sarong or scarf in your handbag when visiting the Indian subcontinent!
  • I have worked in the travel industry for over 20 years, however, not an expert in these areas. You clearly are, Ayesha.
