A bit about me
Although a relative newcomer to the world of tour operating, my working life has been long marinated in travel. For seventeen years I was the Chief Travel Correspondent of The Sunday Times, which meant spending several months ‘on the road’ researching and writing features covering more or less everything (aside from skiing) and more or less everywhere (aside from the ‘Stans’). As currently Travel Editor of Good Housekeeping I still keep travel writing simmering on the stove although tour operating is now my number one pursuit.
Nine years ago, together with Jerry Bridge (ex Bridge the World), I established Bridge & Wickers, a travel company specialising in luxury tailor made holidays to Australia and New Zealand, later extending our horizons to encompass Canada. Two years ago we were acquired by The Ultimate Travel Company but still retain our own ‘Limited’ status and distinctive brand under the Ultimate umbrella. We are currently expanding our world to incorporate the USA, which I am very excited about.
My favourite place
I get asked this all the time and always find it impossible to give a simple answer. But if push comes to shove I’d have to say Sydney, but also taking in its backdoor attractions of National Park beaches around Jarvis Bay, the Blue Mountains and the vineyards of the Hunter Valley. But for a complete immersion into a totally different culture my favourite would be India. Closer to home I love being on the Mediterranean, literally, sailing a yacht off the wild southwest coast of Turkey.
My most memorable experience
Tracking a leopard in Kenya, just me and a guide, coming across the place where, moments before, it has rested. We felt the warm soil and watched as the blades of grass that it just had lain upon slowly returned to the upright.
My top tips
When packing make two piles, one of things you think you might need and the other for essentials. Discard the first pile then whittle down the second by half.
