A SOLAR-POWERED DESERT CAMP BELOW LICANCABUR
UNAI Atacama Luxury Tents is set in the Ayllu de Solor, around 5 kilometres from the centre of San Pedro de Atacama, with views towards the Licancabur Volcano and the open landscapes of the Atacama Desert, Chile. It is a small, family-led project created as a sustainable luxury tented hotel, with a clear emphasis on nature, design and attentive service rather than scale.
Accommodation is in luxury tents of 40 or 60 square metres, designed for the desert climate and equipped with air conditioning, central heating, private terraces and en-suite bathrooms with bathtub and shower. The Suite Luxury Tent has a king-size bed and sitting area, while the Family Luxury Tent has two bedrooms and a living area. The UNAI Master Tent adds a separate glam room with vanity, wardrobe and walk-in closet. Some of the larger tents include a terrace with a hot tub.
The design draws on traditional Atacamenian techniques and local materials, including wood, brea, cane and adobe, with interiors kept natural and pared back. Sustainability is central to the hotel’s approach: operations are powered by a solar energy plant, the restaurant works with local producers, and the hotel has recycling, composting and organic garden initiatives. Amenities are Ecocert-certified and compliant with Cosmebio standards.
Dining is an important part of the experience. UNAI Restaurant is led by Juan Pablo Mardones and Maureen Jones, whose cooking focuses on northern Chilean flavours, fresh local ingredients and Chilean wines. Guests can choose from bed and breakfast, half board, all-inclusive and private programmes, with experiences ranging from à la carte meals to tasting menus with wine pairing.
Facilities include YALI Wellness Retreat, set around a centuries-old carob tree, with outdoor massage and therapy areas, an open-air shower, waterfall, quartz bed, yoga deck and fire pit. Experiences can include massage, sound healing, yoga, acupuncture, e-bikes, private guides and half-day or full-day excursions. UNAI works particularly well for couples, honeymooners and families who want a small, design-led base in the Atacama with strong food, privacy and easy access to San Pedro de Atacama.
