Traditionally the best time to visit Peru is during the dry season in the Andes, which generally speaking is from April to early November. If you’re keen to hike this is the ideal time to visit and expect warm days and cold nights. Peak summer months of July and August can be busy, so it’s sensible to plan well in advance.

The wettest month is normally February and is the only time of year the Inca Trail is closed (for general maintenance and to prevent erosion), but Machu Picchu still remains open. One of the many advantages of visiting Peru out of the dry season is attractions are far less crowded and hotel prices come down.

The Peruvian Amazon is hot and humid year round, but rainfall is highest between November and April.

Lima and the coast has a different weather pattern to the rest of the country and the best time to visit is during the summer, from December to March. Temperatures can be as high as 30C at this time of year and it’s normally sunny and humid. The rest of the year the Peruvian coast suffers from garúa, a blanket of sea-mist.

There are festivities nearly every month in Peru, but some of the most famous include Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Inti Raymi. Semana Santa takes place the week before Easter Sunday and Inti Raymi takes place on the 24th June to mark the winter solstice in Peru.
