The serenity of Ubud’s ancient temples with their intricate carvings and tranquil lotus pools. The gentle smiles of the local people. The landscaped gardens and coconut groves of Gili Trawangan. The sheer pleasure of being together and experiencing Lombok’s dazzling beaches, exciting watersports and outdoor adventures.
Even waking early can be romantic in Bali – especially if your destination is the top of Mount Batur to watch as the sunrise gilds the surrounding countryside. Or you’re setting off in the cool of the day to walk barefoot through tranquil temples, meeting quietly dignified monks in vivid saffron robes. Or you’ve decided to go your own way and explore – by bicycle - the dense green of a tropical forest, on a beautiful peninsular like Tanjung Ringgit.
Considered the spiritual heart of Bali, Ubud is an absorbing town and your first full day there gives you ample time to explore the temples, side streets with interesting local shops and the large central market.
The next day you will take a 10 kilometre drive to see the 11th century Royal Tombs – the temple of Gunung Kawi, at Tampak Siring. Expect temples carved out of cliffs and steps leading to a sacred river valley.
Your last full day in Ubud begins with a sunrise mountain trek to experience the breath-taking views from the summit of Mount Batur, and a visit to the still-active volcano cone.
Ubud – Gili Trawangan
From Ubud you travel east to Padangbai and board a speedboat to the romantic island of Gili Trawangan. You’ll stay amidst a coconuut grove, in a honeymoon villa with its own tropical garden and private pool.
Stay: Four nights in Kelapa Luxury Villas.
There are no roads, or cars on Gili Trawangan, but if you want to set off and explore the island, there are bicycles and traditional pony carriages. But you can also spend your honeymoon luxuriating on fine white beaches, or walking in the shallows of a sky-blue sea. You could amble round the island in a couple of hours, but discovering it together means it will take you much, much longer. This beautiful, remote place gives you plenty of privacy and time to be together.
Spend glorious days soaking in the sun and swimming in crystal clear waters, amidst a true tropical paradise. In front of your hotel is a coral garden – home to large numbers of exotic, multi-coloured fish – that is perfect for snorkelling and diving. You can take sea kayaks and explore the coastline around the camp – finding your own, deserted beach – or ride bicycles around the Tanjung Ringgit area, discovering the peninsula’s luxuriant flora as you go. You may even see monkeys, civet cats and colourful lizards.
World class surfing is offered at nearby Ekas Bay, and local fishermen will take you island-hopping to remote islets like Gili Sunut and Pantai Segui. You can also fish for your supper from the beaches, rock pools and low cliffs.
