Windhoek is the first point of entry for most visitors to Namibia, and is an excellent place to stretch your legs after a long flight.
Take a walking tour of the city centre to discover the architectural remains of European colonialism, before sampling some classic German cuisine in one of the cafes. Street vendors along the Post St Mall exhibit an array of crafts under the shade of palm trees – great for picking up a souvenir. After visit one of the museums to learn about the city’s history, or simply kick back in the central park.
One of the Windhoek’s hidden gems is the National Botanical Gardens, where almost all of the plants found here are indigenous to Namibia. Founded in 1993, this is a lovely spot to spend a sunny afternoon.
If you want to explore further, there are a number of places outside of Windhoek ideal for a day trip. This includes the Dan Viljoen Game Park, which offers scenic hiking trails as well as encounters with wildlife. Alternatively enjoy the relaxing waters at the Gross Barmen hot springs resort, just a few hours’ drive from the city.
