Half shrouded by giant creepers and steeped in the history of the Khmer Empire, the mystical appeal of the ‘lost city’ of Angkor remains untouched. These 1,000-year-old temples are the jewel in Cambodia’s crown, but there’s so much more to discover beyond this archaeological wonder.
Visitors to Siem Reap can also enjoy tranquil boat rides on the calm waters of Tonle Sap Lake, dotted with floating villages where local traditions haven’t changed for centuries. There’s also the wide boulevards, French colonial architecture and vivacious markets of Cambodia’s riverside capital, Phnom Penh. Here, the haunting Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum provides a deeper insight into the country’s tragic modern history.
Away from the capital lie the traditional towns and untouched villages of rural Cambodia, rich in pre-Angkor ruins, verdant rice paddies and pretty lakes. Equally enticing are the white sands and turquoise waters of the southern coast. Don’t forget to indulge in the delicious seafood on offer – especially the crab!
