There are few wildlife experiences more spellbinding than seeing a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is home to around half of the world’s population of these majestic primates, and is must-see for any visitor here.
Covering a 160 sq. km expanse in north-western Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park features five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountain range. These colossal volcanoes, along with bamboo and verdant montane forest, create an utterly enchanting landscape that is a joy to explore.
The park was first introduced in 1925 and is today one of the best places in Africa to track the endangered mountain gorilla. These habituated primates are usually found amongst the bamboo forests that carpet the upper slopes of the mountains, where you can watch in wonder as they play, eat and sleep.
Although the gorillas are the stars of the show, the park has a rich biodiversity and houses hundreds of bird species, buffalo, duiker and forest elephants. The lower slopes of the mountains are the domain of rare golden monkeys, and you can spend an entertaining hour watching these boisterous creatures swinging through the trees.
