A HISTORIC LODGE OVERLOOKING THE ANGLO-ZULU WAR BATTLEFIELDS
Fugitives Drift Lodge sits within a Natural Heritage Site overlooking both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, two of the most significant battlefields of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The reserve also includes the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives while attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of the 1/24th Regiment.
It was here that David and Nicky Rattray pioneered heritage tourism in South Africa, creating a lodge centred around the stories, landscapes and history of the Anglo-Zulu War. Today, the property remains closely associated with the Rattray family and their long-standing connection to the region.
Accommodation is divided between the Lodge and the Guest House, both offering spacious en-suite rooms with private verandahs overlooking the reserve. Interiors are traditional and comfortable, while swimming pools and shaded outdoor spaces provide a quieter contrast to the surrounding battlefield landscapes. Umzinyathi House, a private three-bedroom villa, offers a more independent stay for families or small groups.

The experience at Fugitives Drift Lodge is shaped primarily by its guided battlefield tours. Led by some of South Africa’s most respected guides, daily excursions to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift combine detailed historical storytelling with perspectives on Zulu history and culture. These tours are widely regarded as among the finest battlefield experiences in Southern Africa.
Beyond the historical focus, the reserve also offers nature walks, horse riding and opportunities to view local wildlife and birdlife across the surrounding landscape. The setting above the Buffalo River adds a strong sense of place to the experience, particularly at sunrise and sunset.
Fugitives Drift Lodge works particularly well for travellers with an interest in South African history, offering an immersive and thoughtful experience within one of the country’s most historically significant landscapes.
