GLORIOUS NATURAL SCENERY
Away from the hustle and bustle of Havana lies the peaceful valley of Viñales, set in the rolling countryside of Pinar del Rio. It’s a region of traditional farms, provincial villages and tobacco plantations, not to mention glorious natural scenery.
Earning UNESCO World Heritage Site status at the end of the 20th century, the Viñales Valley is instantly recognisable thanks to the mogotes – huge limestone karsts – dominating its landscape. Standing out against the flat valley floor, these intriguing natural landmarks have an otherworldly beauty and can measure up to 300 metres in height.
The town of Vinales, with its colourful houses and horse drawn carts, is a great base to explore the valley and surrounding countryside. Go hiking, horse riding and rock climbing in the valley itself, or head out in a boat to explore the areas numerous caves. As this is tobacco country, you’ll also have the opportunity to observe how cigars are made the old-fashioned way.
Viñales combines well with a stay on Cayo Levisa, a tiny islet in the Colorados Archipelago just a short distance from the coast. With only one hotel on the island, you can enjoy its white-sanded beach, warm waters and superb snorkelling with few others.
