Parador de Leon Hotel, Spain

Stroll around the stone-flagged courtyard, or lean over the second tier balcony overlooking the formal courtyard gardens, and you may just be able to imagine you can hear the chanting of monks echoing down through the centuries.

Parador de León has been created from the 16th century San Marcos Monastery, itself a replacement for a monastery dating back to King Alfonso VI who ruled the region in the 12th century.

Today, much of the atmosphere and original architecture survives. The exterior is monumental in its form with massive, rounded arches and richly decorated stonework. The interior is a symphony of regal halls, a library, great stone walls hung with tapestries, a refectory-style restaurant with wooden beams and rooms with four poster beds, shuttered windows, fireplaces and period-style furniture.
