Explore Nepal’s vibrant cities and breathtaking Himalayas before uncovering Bhutan’s hidden monasteries, lush valleys, and timeless mountain culture.

ABOUT THE TOUR

Our adventure begins in Nepal in the wonder-filled capital of Kathmandu, a fascinating and exotic city of ancient temples, palaces, stupas and colourful streets of traditional houses, many intricately carved. We also visit the nearby medieval Newar town of Bhaktapur. We travel on to the Pokhara Valley in the Nepalese Himalayas to stay in a remote mountain lodge with breath-taking scenery, before returning to Kathmandu.

We then fly on to the tiny Kingdom of Bhutan, which for centuries was closed to western visitors and remained hidden behind the peaks of the Himalayas – thankfully no longer the case today. Our journey encompasses splendid stupas and dzongs (monasteries) along with the country’s spectacular landscape of fertile valleys, lush forests and snow-capped peaks. We meet the delightful people and discover the unique culture of this delightful Kingdom on the ‘roof of the world’.

Hamish Van Gruisen

Hamish grew up in Gloucestershire, but it was time spent far from home that sparked his love for travel. Early family safaris in East Africa and treks through the Nepalese Himalaya planted the seeds of a lifelong curiosity, not just for landscapes and wildlife, but for how people live and what they value. Since joining Ultimate, Hamish has been fortunate to explore parts of the world that have both challenged and inspired him. From running an ultra-marathon in the beautiful (but very sandy) Wadi Rum to experiencing the intricate ritual of a geisha tea ceremony in Kyoto, each destination offers a fresh perspective and, at times, a humbling reminder of our place in the world. For Hamish, these experiences aren’t just memories. They shape the way holidays are crafted at Ultimate, because the best kind of travel doesn’t just take you somewhere new; it changes the way you see the world.
