MS Eugenie MS Eugenie

With the profile of an early steamer – complete with ornate paddle wheel housings, wheelhouse and large open viewing decks – the MS Eugenie is named to commemorate a pivotal moment in Egyptian history. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.

Despite appearances, the Eugenie was actually built in 1993 and comprises the latest amenities. Which means you will be transported in comfort as well as style, to Egypt’s far distant past. The Nubian region and Lake Nasser present you with some awesome temples and time-touching monuments. The great carved columns of Beit El Wali and the Kiosk of Kertassi. The Citadel of Amada and the Tomb of Penout. The temples of Meharakka, Dakka and Kalabsha. And the mighty, enigmatic statues at Abu Simbel. They are all astonishing testaments to an ancient civilisation. They will all, despite being much-visited, give you a sense of their time and your own insignificance in the passing of the eons. But pause for thought. Accomplished as the old builders were, it’s worth remembering that Lake Nassau itself is man-made, and that the High Dam at Aswan – started in 1954 – is actually 17 times larger than the Great Pyramid at Gisa and took over 30,000 men a total of 10 years to build.

  • We have travelled with The Ultimate Travel Company six times, the most recent was to New Zealand last year. The trip was very well organised as usual, with excellent accommodation and a wide variety of experiences. Given our obvious satisfaction with Ultimate, we had booked to go to Australia with them this year but due to Covid this was unfortunately cancelled, Ultimate handled the situation very professionally and promptly refunded the whole of our deposit without any quibble. When travel becomes viable again we would definitely rebook with them.
